Sedentary Lifestyle? Move It or Lose It!

With the Advent of Technology such as cell phones and wireless internet, our lives are busier than ever. However, even with all of the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, studies show that Americans are less active and fit. Research suggests that a mere 21% of adults are meeting established physical activity guidelines. Even worse only 5% of adults perform 30 minutes or more of physical activity every day!

Did you know that our physical activity has decreased drastically over the last 40 years?

Since the 1960s, jobs that required moderate to heavy physical activity have decreased by an estimated 80%. Additionally, our workforce has become rapidly digitized and automated since the advent of robots and computers. With technology making hard labor a lot less common, sedentary jobs have increased 83% since 1950. According to the American Heart Association, more people are sitting behind a desk for 6 to 7 hours a day with little to no activity.

This lifestyle of comfort and growing physical inactivity has actually caused the incidence of chronic health conditions in America to be the only thing that is growing. When you combine the inactivity of an American work day with the time we spend traveling, sleeping, and wasting time on social media and the internet, it barely leaves any time left to move.

It is estimated that 20% of all deaths for people over 35 years old can be attributed to a lack of physical activity.

Follow these tips to keep it moving:

  1. One walk to work or on your lunch break
  2. set reminders to stand up every 30 minutes at your desk
  3.  invest in a standing desk
  4.  take phone calls outside and walk around at the same time
  5.  spend free time being active instead of watching TV or playing video games
  6.  take the stairs instead of using the elevator
  7.  Park further away from stores even if there are closer spots
  8.  schedule physical activity like an appointment and keep it

Products like Boomer Boost and Gladiator Barley help give us the energy we need to keep it moving through the day.
